PARIS, June 11, 2009 -- Biosystems International (BSI) a biotechnology company focused on the development of novel monoclonal antibody-based diagnostics for cancer and metabolic diseases has established a licensing agreement with the Lohocla Research Corporation for the use of BSI’s patented monoclonal antibody proteomics platform for the discovery of novel alcoholism liver disease biomarkers in blood. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
About Alcoholism and Liver Disease
Alcohol-use disorder includes both alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Both contribute to one of society’s most expensive, destructive, and tragic problems. Alcohol-use disorder afflicts 17.6 million individuals in the U.S. and costs $185 billion in direct and indirect expenses yearly. Alcohol abuse kills at least 75,000 Americans each year and decreases longevity by an average of thirty years. Heavy alcohol consumption often leads to alcohol induced liver disease including fatty liver and hepatitis. Currently, definitive diagnosis of this condition requires analysis by biopsy, usually when symptoms are already apparent and liver damage may be extensive. “A non-invasive blood test for the early detection of alcohol induced liver disease would identify those at risk and encourage abstinence from alcohol resulting in lower mortality due to a lower prevalence of advanced liver disease as well as other alcohol related health problems,” stated Boris Tabakoff, President and CEO of Lohocla. “This agreement provides BSI with another opportunity to apply our powerful technology in an area where there is a critical unmet medical need,” added Jean-Pierre Tirouflet, CEO of Biosystems International.
