Therapy focus: Osteoarthritis

This feature discusses the various approaches that have been, and are being, taken towards alleviating pain in and treating the condition of osteoarthritis. The article is in four parts. The first reviews the pain relief drugs that are already on the market and are in development for osteoarthritis, and the second discusses progress towards various disease-modifying therapeutics – which may be just chondroprotective, or may even help to build up cartilage; development work being advanced by Galapagos and Medivir is described. The last two parts of the article look at the preventive approach (work on biomarkers), and at the use of stem cells.

Galapagos' Latest Advance: Its Licensing Deal with Janssen

Pfizer Acquires Immunology Company Coley

Pfizer has entered into an agreement to acquire immunotherapy company Coley Pharmaceutical Group, for US$164 M. Based on its Toll-like receptor technology, Coley has developed drug candidates for the treatment of various diseases - including cancer, asthma and allergy, and autoimmune diseases, as well as adjuvants to enhance the effectiveness of vaccines. The article looks at the company's pipeline and previous collaborations, and discusses events at Coley leading up to the deal with Pfizer.

Alzheimer's - A Great Deal Still to be Done

Therapy Focus: Alzheimer's Disease

The worldwide cost of dementia care is estimated to be US$315.4 B annually. In the US, the care costs for Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been estimated at over US$100 B, and a 20007 study put the cost in the UK at £17.03 B (US$34 B).
