  • Published on: 2008-12-12 Bristol-Myers Squibb and Exelixis Sign Cancer Deal Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) and Exelixis are to collaborate on the development of two of Exelixis’ novel clinical-stage anticancer compounds, XL184 and XL281. GlaxoSmithKline turned down an option to develop the products in October, returning full rights to Exelixis and allowing the biotech’s long-term partner, BMS, to step in.
  • Published on: 2008-12-08 AstraZeneca Expands One Deal and Terminates Another AstraZeneca has amended two deals this week as the company determines its R&D investment priorities. Firstly, it added Japanese rights to its dapagliflozin collaboration for type 2 diabetes with Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) and secondly, AstraZeneca terminated the heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) deal with Infinity Pharmaceuticals, which it inherited from MedImmune.
  • Published on: 2008-12-03 Novartis and Evotec to Identify and Develop Small Molecules Evotec has agreed to discover and develop small molecules for Novartis, in a deal that includes milestone payments of US$28 M. Although the two companies have been collaborating on various agreements since the late nineties, this latest agreement is potentially the most significant, which allows Evotec to discover and develop drug candidates for Novartis through to clinical trials.

Although Galapagos has a strong level of expertise within the therapy area, this is its first antibody-focused agreement, which makes human antibody company, MorphoSys, an ideal partner for this venture.
  • Published on: 2008-11-25 Cephalon Signs Option Agreement for ImmuPharma’s First-in-class Lupus Drug Cephalon has paid US$15 M upfront to obtain an option for an exclusive, worldwide licence to ImmuPharma’s Phase IIb lupus product, Lupuzor™. The deal provides ImmuPharma with some much-needed cash, while Cephalon gains low-risk access to a product which helps position its pipeline for longer-term growth.
  • Published on: 2008-11-24 Merrion to Develop Insulin Drugs with Novo Novo Nordisk signed an agreement to develop oral insulin analogues using Merrion Pharmaceuticals’ Gastrointestinal Permeation Enhancement Technology (GIPET) in a deal valued at €45 M (US$58 M). Novo Nordisk is seeking alternative strategies for diabetes after abandoning its inhaled insulin product.

The two companies already have a marketing agreement for Omrix’s flagship product, but with this acquisition, J&J can now use its marketing skills to sell other Omrix products while Omrix focuses on developing novel biosurgical products.

The beneficiaries are Eisai, which has acquired the genetics programme, and QR Pharma, which has licensed worldwide rights to three compounds, Posiphen™, bisnorcymcerine and phenserine.

The agreement allows troubled NitroMed to create value for its shareholders, and provides Archemix, with much-needed cash and a public listing. With the current downturn in the economy, it is to be expected that we will see more such deals in the near future.

The acquisition will bring cutting edge expertise in vaccine technology and products to Zydus Cadila, an area in which it was aspiring to gain a stronger foothold.
