- Published on: 2008-10-06 Eli Lilly Wins the ImClone Prize Eli Lilly has become the proud owner of ImClone, successfully outbidding Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) and paying nearly US$2 B more than BMS’ original offer in the process. ImClone fitted neatly into both companies’ strategies, though the size of this acquisition shows that Eli Lilly was the more eager out of the two. ImClone does, however, come with some strings attached.

Instead the companies have formed a collaboration with GlycArt for the development of its antibody for the potential treatment of CD20-positive B-cell malignancies.

A deal signed with Japan Tobacco for its bone growth stimulator drug, JTT-305, is one of the novel approaches that Merck is pursuing.

The subject of the agreement is MAXY-4, a protein being developed for the lucrative rheumatoid arthritis market and other autoimmune diseases.
- Published on: 2008-09-18 Protherics Agrees to Takeover by BTG BTG is to buy Protherics in stock in a deal that will create one of Britain’s biggest biotech companies. The rationale is to create a ‘sustainably profitable life sciences business’ – one that has the resources to bring drugs to market rather than having to rely on out-licensing deals as is common in the biotech industry.
- Published on: 2008-09-16 Bayer’s Foray into Biotech Bayer has acquired the German biotech company, Direvo, in an all cash deal to bolster its biologicals pipeline. Through its protein engineering platform, Direvo was developing therapeutic antibodies and proteases to treat a range of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease and blood disorders.
- Published on: 2008-09-12 CV Therapeutics Aims High Through its Agreement with Menarini CV Therapeutics (CVT) has high hopes for its angina drug Ranexa® (ranolazine extended release) after signing over the drug’s commercialisation rights to the Menarini Group in exchange for an upfront fee, milestones and royalties. However, CVT still retains the drug’s rights within the lucrative US and Japanese markets.
